History

Rutherfords Cottage has been in the same family since 1939 and has provided wonderful memories for countless people. Many of them stayed here as children and have returned to this and other houses nearby with their own families so that they can share the joys of a seaside holiday in North Norfolk. Just yards from the creek in Burnham Overy Staithe, where we are told Nelson learned to sail, Rutherfords is in an ideal location for a seaside holiday.

By the sea

There is no need to get in the car as the creek is just seconds from the front door. For small children, there is crabbing on the quay or bucket and spading in the creek. For those who enjoy exploring further afield, there are beautiful walks along the sea wall to Gun Hill and beyond to Holkham with vast expanses of stunning beaches. Or you can take a ferry or walk out to Scolt Head Island for a day on the beach with a picnic and buckets and spades. Whatever your age and interests, this is the perfect place to create wonderful memories.

Relax and enjoy

As well as the coastline, within easy reach of the cottage you will find many great pubs with delicious food, as well as shops and galleries close by in Burnham Market and a little further away in Holt. There are wonderful food shops and delicatessens to enjoy back at the cottage, with an open fire in the winter for cosy, relaxing evenings. There are also many beautiful country houses to visit nearby, such as Blickling Hall, Holkham Hall and Houghton Hall. All in all this is the ideal spot to relax, recharge your batteries and enjoy the company of family and friends.

Plenty to do

In addition to walking you might also want to bring your bikes; play tennis (all tenants of Rutherfords have access to the two village courts); take your children to the recreation ground nearby; play golf at Brancaster or Hunstanton; sail at Burnham Overy or learn to sail at Brancaster Staithe or Morston; or go seal-watching at Blakeney Point. It is also a birdwatcher’s paradise.

“Perfect cottage accommodation in an idyllic location - we will be back next year.”

“Utterly charming, great layout, great location, and we loved it.”

"Rutherfords is a very charming, peaceful cottage in an incredible location. Equidistant between a cracking pub and an endearing beach - only fifty metres to each. It comfortably slept six of us (four adults and two kids). I really cannot recommend it highly enough and we look forward to staying here again next year."

"Wonderful cottage in ideal location - the perfect escape. Clean, cosy with everything you could need".

“ We absolutely loved Rutherfords. Such a nice house and great space. Already trying to think of an excuse to go again!”

"Rutherfords was wonderful. 100 yards to the creek, and 100 yards in the opposite direction to an excellent pub. Burnham Overy is still relatively undiscovered. The creek is great for swimming and paddling at low tide. If feeling a little more adventurous, walk to the beach then float back to the cottage with the tide. Can't wait to get back there, we had a magical time.”
